Ontario Safety Certificates: What Actually Gets Checked

A Safety Standards Certificate (often called a safety) is required when you register a used vehicle in Ontario or transfer ownership. It confirms the vehicle meets the province's minimum safety standards on the day it was inspected.

The inspection covers the systems that matter most: brakes and brake lines, tires and wheels, steering and suspension, lights and signals, exhaust, fuel system, and the structural condition of the body and frame. Small items like cracked lenses or worn tires can fail a safety just as easily as major mechanical problems.
