Brake pads are designed to wear out; that's their job. Most pads last between 40,000 and 70,000 km depending on how and where you drive. City driving with constant stop-and-go through Windsor traffic wears pads faster than highway miles.
Three signs mean it's time to get your brakes looked at: squealing or screeching when you press the pedal (wear indicators), grinding metal-on-metal (pads are gone and rotors are being damaged), and a soft or spongy pedal (often air or fluid issues, not just pads).
